Supplier engagement

The work of getting emissions and sustainability data from organisations that don't work for you — surveying, onboarding, supporting and escalating across a supply base that may run to thousands of companies with very different capabilities.

What it is

Supplier engagement is usually framed as a data-collection problem. It's closer to a change-management problem in an organisation you don't control. The distribution matters. A small number of suppliers typically account for the majority of your value-chain emissions, and effort spent on the long tail rarely changes the number. Segmenting by emissions contribution rather than by spend is the first useful move. Capability varies enormously. A large multinational supplier may already publish audited figures. A regional component maker may never have calculated anything. Sending both the same questionnaire produces one useful response and one blank. The commercial lever is the honest part: suppliers respond to procurement criteria far more reliably than to sustainability requests. When emissions data becomes a condition of the contract rather than a favour, response rates change sharply.

Why it matters

It's the rate limiter on Scope 3 accuracy. You can buy better software, hire better analysts and choose better factors, but you cannot improve value-chain data faster than your suppliers are willing and able to provide it.
